Staring at the shattered plane wreck, Abigail’s pounding heart amplified.

“What are we going to do?” Her legs weakened beneath her as she scratched the ant bites burning her arm.

The concern in Mackenzie eyes was confusing. After the way she’d treated him after they crashed, he should hold nothing but contempt for her.

After all, they were complete strangers.

She jumped at rustling in the bushes and scanned the blackness for signs of movement. But she couldn’t see anything, and rolling her shoulders, trying to release the pain in her back, she returned to her battered suitcase. Her gaze darted all over the place and dancing shadows from the fire played havoc with her mind as she wrapped a silk scarf around her neck.

Mackenzie tossed a large stick onto the flames. “We’ll take turns sleeping by the fire, I guess.”

Never before had Abigail slept without a roof over her head. Let alone in the brutal jungle.

The knot in her stomach tightened as she eyed the bushes around her and imagined creatures crawling about the woods.

A shrill bird’s call shattered the silence and squealing, she jumped toward the man she’d met just hours ago.

He placed his hand on her shoulder. “Come on, I’ll take the first watch while you sleep. You must be exhausted.”

She was exhausted. Scared, hungry and exhausted.

The sooner this night was over the better. We will be rescued tomorrow. I know we will.

Mackenzie placed the suitcases they salvaged in a protective semi-circle behind her and she curled on her side on the grass.
With her hands beneath her face as a pillow and the warm fire, she was as comfortable as she was going to get.

She glanced at Mackenzie through the heat distorted air above the fire. He seemed so calm, hypnotised even. The thought of being trapped alone in the jungle was terrifying and she was grateful he survived too, and felt terrible for the things she’d said.

Inhaling a deep breath, she willed herself to rest.

It’s just one night in the jungle.

I can do that.
